Introducing: Tri Wuri Asri Sulistyowati

We just happened to have many inspiring friends around us or met new friends who has done many things in life that we could learn the positive ways of their experiences. That’s what inspired me to write about [OMG! Inspiring Friends] series.

For the first episode, I got the chance to have a gossippy girls talk with Tri Wuri, whom I usually call Ntir, a consultant-slash-traveller who always challenge herself to grab those conferences opportunities to travel around the world in such a young age (plus, expand her network and skills). I haven´t met her for ages so having this interview and our Skype gossip sessions were indeed…awe-inspiring!

We chatted with our mother language, Bahasa Indonesia, of course! But no worry, English translation is available here: You can read the sentences in oranges x)

(psst, we didnt talk about people. We talked about..places!)

How could she travel around the world by writing papers? Curious? Let’s hear her story here😉

Ola Ntir! Piye kabar’e? Jalan-jalan mulu ih! (Pasti bosen denger kalimat terakhir yes, haha) // Hello Ntir! How are you? You always travel!

Halooo, bhellaaa.. Alhamdulillah kabar baikkkk, sudah lama tak bersuaa..//Hello Bhella. Luckily I am good, it has been a long time we haven’t met each other.

Ntir, kok hobi sih jalan-jalan?//Ntir, why do you have traveling as your hobby?

//Yes, I really love it. I think there are many new, interesting, and amazing things to be explored every time you are in other places.

Sudah berapa benua kamu jejakkan kakimu Ntir? // How many continents have your feet stepped on, Ntir?

Luckily I got the opportunity to step on America and Europe.

Keren amat sih Ntir. Gimana caranya kamu bisa ke benua2 itu? Nabung berapa juta tahun? //What a cool person you are. How could you have the chances to step on those two continents, Ntir? How many years have you been saving money for that? Zillion years of saving?

//In 2011, my friends and I made a research project paper based on our field experience. At that time, the event was related with our expertise in Geoscience and coincidentally, I made another paper with my lecturer to be submitted for an event in the States at the same time. I was indeed lucky because those two papers were approved (the first one in Poland and the second one in San Antonio, TX). The last one, in 2013, my friends and I and also some colleagues from SKK Migas made a research paper that finally got accepted to be presented in London, UK.

Nabung? //Saving money? Hehe, luckily I got sponsorship from companies for most of those three events I have mentioned previously. The companies had some collaboration with ITB (Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia) or the events’ organizer.

Kalau untuk conference gitu kamu tahu infonya darimana Ntir? // How did you know any information about conferences, Ntir?

I usually know information about conferences through the alumni or students association mailing list. And also there is a geoscientist society website to get the newest update.

What kind of paper did you submit for the conferences? Were those your thesis research projects or any other project?

Those weren’t my thesis project because my thesis was in a company whose data were quite secured. So mostly I submitted papers from my projects with my lecturer whose copyright were granted by LAPI ITB or Dirjen Migas.

//Commonly we have to pay for conferences and the cost are quite high. How could you get sponsorships?

Tapi it’s worthed kok, semua toh gak didapet dengan mudah.. Penolakan juga suka dateng, tapi kalo rezeki jg gak kemana //We indeed need sponsorship to come to conferences abroad. Mostly, I asked for my lecturer or alumni’s assistance to get those funds. They supported a lot especially because my papers were related with our expertise. It was hard at the beginning: I had to come to many companies or organizations. But it’s all worth it! It was always hard to get something, being rejected, but I do believe that if it’s my fortune, then it will be.

Apa serunya conferences sambil jalan-jalan, Ntir? Kan pasti jadwal conferences-nya super padat tuh. //What’s the good thing about participating in conferences and traveling at the same time, Ntir? I guess the conferences’ schedule were quite tight.

What I like about participating in a conference is meeting many people, especially meeting geoscientists from the whole world. Mostly, I enrolled in a student networking or free course program. So, I extended my stays for more days during the conferences. I still had the obligation to stay during the event, so I stayed. And if I have more days left outside the event, I travelled. For my travels, I used my own money or my conference allowance left over.

I just stalked your Instagram account. You just got back from Turkey, right? Where did you go and for how many days?

//YES! I travelled to Turkey for 14days with 5 friends. I went to Istanbul (of course!) and enjoyed a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia. I also went to Bodrum, Pamukkale, Kusadasi, and Uludag.

Gimana cara membagi waktu antara deadline kerja yang super numpuk nan hectic sambil bikin itinerary perjalanan, Ntir?//How do you divide your time between your crazy yet hectic work deadlines and your travel’s itinerary, Ntir?

Hmm, membagi waktu yah? I love making a timeline. It is my habit because I am a well-organized person especially in term of planning. I didn’t make any itinerary when I travelled solo.  But for my last Turkey trip, we defined itineraries very well because we were six people and everyone had their own must-visit places. So, we had to make guidelines.

Ntir, jalan-jalan kan capek. Habis banyak duit pula. //Ntir, traveling is indeed tiring. You spend a high amount of money also, haha! What did you get from it? Would you like to share it to us?

Hahaha, jalan2 capekkkk tapi seru bangetttt.. Emg sih habis duit setelah itu cuma kerasa seneng aja.. Apalagi setelah punya uang sendiri, worth to spend.. Setelah bosen melakukan rutinitas sehari hari trus takes a day off dan menikmati hasil jerih payah sendiri ituuu rasanyaaaaaa menyenangkan..//LOL. Yes, traveling is indeed tiring but awesome. I spent a lot of money but I felt happy. Especially after I earn money by myself, it is worth to spend. After I get bored of my daily routine, then I take a day off and enjoying my earned money is…pleasant!

//What did I get so far? A lot! But maybe I would like to say more in term of my own personality. I can socialize with others easily, learn many things related with cultures or habits, more mature, have many friends, I love Indonesia even more especially its cuisines, and see something from broader perspective.

Every places you go, have their own story and scenery.. And part of being traveler is a writer and painter.. Itu jg salah satu aku suka throwing back time di instagram dan writing my journey.. // Every places you go, have their own story and scenery. And part of being traveller is a writer and painter. I also love to throw back time through my Instagram account and writing my journey. And one of the causes why I could travel around the world is by writing papers. Writing is a part of our own ideas that could broaden people’s perspective, give new thoughts, and inspire people.

Okay, obrigada (PT-thank you) Ntir. Let’s catch up when I am in Indonesia. Psst, Ms. OMG! would like to meet you also!

Sure, indeed! It will be a pleasure for me to meet Ms. OMG!! See you soon, dear! Tell me when you are in Indonesia, xoxo! :*
